2009 a Tough Year, but Better Days are Ahead PDF Print E-mail

One of the most difficult years in Michigan history is drawing to a close.  In 2009, the unimaginable happened with the bankruptcies of General Motors and Chrysler.  The subsequent restructuring of the auto industry has made one thing crystal clear:  The old Michigan economy is gone, and it's not coming back.
In response, our strategy continues to be to diversify Michigan's economy, educate and train our citizens for 21st century jobs, and protect people during this transition from the old economy to the new.
Our diversification plan focuses on six economic sectors:  advanced manufacturing, such as nanotechnology and robotics; clean energy; life sciences; defense and homeland security; tourism; and film.  Let me highlight just a few of this year's successes.

Green economy continues growing PDF Print E-mail

This was a good week for Michigan's growing green economy.

First, GM announced that it's investing $336 million in its Detroit Hamtramck Assembly plant to begin producing the Chevrolet Volt, its new electric vehicle, late next year.
The Volt symbolizes the new GM and the new Michigan.  It's designed to go up to 40 miles on electricity without using gasoline or producing tailpipe emissions.  When the Volt's lithium-ion battery is depleted of energy, a small gasoline engine and generator operate to extend the total driving range to about 300 miles.

Consider the hungry this Thanksgiving PDF Print E-mail

For most of us, Thanksgiving is a time to feast and celebrate nature's bounty.  However, for more than a million people in Michigan, it's a struggle just to put food on the table every day. 

Working families often have to choose between paying their bills or going to the doctor or buying food.  And seniors sometimes are forced to choose between food and prescription drugs.

These are choices that shouldn't have to be made.  One way we can help is getting people the food they need.
